Q1. What needed to be scanned?
A Truck grille. In automotive engineering, a grille covers an opening in the body of a vehicle to allow air to enter. Most vehicles feature a grille at the front of the vehicle, to protect the radiator and engine.
Q2. Why did the truck manufacturer want to scan the grille?
The manufacturer needs to obtain the 3D data of the grille through 3D scanning for product development.
Q3. What are the traditional measuring tools? Do they have any limitations?
Operators usually adopted structured-light 3D scanners to get the 3D data of the truck grille. However, these 3D scanners do have limits:
- Shiny surfaces have to be powder-sprayed.
- The truck grille is covered with many small holes. Thus, the post-process is time-consuming and inefficient.
- The truck grille is a splicing design with superimposed parts. The structured-light 3D scanner has low flexibility during scanning, and it is hard to capture dead angles and tiny details.
The ScanTech 3D Solution
Considering the scanning accuracy and efficiency, we decided to use the HSCAN 3D scanner to finish the project.

Time requirements:
- Attaching the markers: 4 minutes
- 3D scanning: 3 minutes
- Data process: 4 minutes
The HSCAN 3D scanner only takes 11 minutes to finish the whole process. The accurate 3D data and high work efficiency contribute to auto parts redesign. In the future, 3D scanning will penetrate all aspects of automotive manufacturing.
