Alfred Wegener Institute

Alfred Wegener Institute
The Alfred Wegener Institute conducts research in the Arctic, Antarctic and the oceans of the middle and high latitudes. It coordinates polar research in Germany and provides important infrastructure such as the research icebreaker Polarstern and stations in the Arctic and Antarctic for international science. The Alfred Wegener Institute is one of the 18 research centers of the Helmholtz Association, the largest scientific organization in Germany.

Profile Description

As the Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research, the Alfred Wegener Institute works primarily in the cold and temperate regions of the world. Together with numerous national and international partners, we are involved in decoding the complex processes in the “system earth”. Our planet is a profound climate change. Polar regions and seas are changing. At the same time, they play a central role in the global climate system. How is the planet Earth evolving? Do we observe short-term fluctuations or long-term trends? Polar and marine research has always been a fascinating scientific challenge. Today it is also a piece of futurology.
