"The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - IIT - was created with the objective of promoting Italy's technological development and higher education in science and technology.
IIT is making an effort to implement its scientific program in this context, with the specific goal of integration between basic scientific research and the development of technical applications.
The research is carried out in highly innovative scientific fields, which represent the most advanced frontiers in modern technology; their contents are widely applicable in multiple areas, from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, to life sciences and nanobiotechnology.
IIT research is carried out according to a Scientific Plan that lasts 3 years. The first Strategic Plan (2005-2008) was dedicated to the construction of the central research laboratory and of the humanoid technology program based on 3 technology platforms (Robotics; Neuroscience; Drug Discovery). The second Strategic Plan (2009-2011) has consolidated the research program with the activation of 4 new technology platforms (Energy; Environment, Health & Safety; Smart Materials; Computation) and with the launch of the national network of IIT laboratories.
The next Strategic Plan (2012-2014) consolidates the basis set during the previous years, reinforcing the impact and the transfer of the results to the international market also through the interdisciplinary nature of the research and the enhancement of the internationalization of the collaborations.
IIT is a private law Foundation, created with special Government Law no. 269 of September 30th 2003, which was later converted into Law n. 326 of November 2003.
IIT has chosen an organizational model inspired by the top national and international scientific institutions. To be able to effectively pursue its programme, it combines a main laboratory with internationally renown scientists, and a network of excellent laboratories, which contribute with in-depth studies into the programme’s individual points.
