Since 1998, CEO Scott DeFelice has been developing advanced technology for a range of applications for the high performance polymer, poly-ether-ketone-ketone (PEKK), originally invented and commercialized by DuPont for the aerospace market. In 2000, DeFelice founded OPM, the first company to successfully apply additive manufacturing solutions to PEKK, creating a unique “toolbox” by applying proprietary OXPEKK® composition IP with process and application technology.
From the outset, OPM’s focus has been on developing and delivering fully functional parts to large demanding markets, and the Company began to incorporate 3D printing technology to its OXPEKK® material in 2006. As a recognized leader in high performance additive manufacturing (HPAM™), OPM delivers enterprise level, functional end-use products to the biomedical, aerospace and industrial markets. OPM’s success in penetrating HPAMTM markets has resulted from years of advanced materials science; the development of a range of know-how and protectable IP around its additive manufacturing technology; and establishing comprehensive quality management systems strict facility and production process quality controls as preconditions to gaining regulatory approvals.
OPM’s OXFAB® technology is the subject of the only B-Basis Allowable database available for structural aerospace materials produced using additive manufacturing. OPM Industrial delivers space-grade OXFAB® parts for a range of applications in energy, semiconductor and automotive industries delivering strength and performance at considerably lower cost and weight compared to current customer options in metals and composites.
A pioneer in personalized medicine, OPM Biomedical became the only company to receive FDA clearance to manufacture 3D printed patient‐specific polymeric implants when it received 510(k) clearance for its cranial prostheses line for surgeons around the world in February 2013.* The Company now has two additional FDA clearances, and is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for maxillofacial implants as well as its first spinal implant line. OPM also provides contract manufacturing services to third parties for a broad range of 3D-printed biomedical implant applications. (*OPM Biomedical shipped its 750th cranial implant in November 2015.)
From its inception as a materials company, OPM has developed its proprietary OXPEKK® technology platform to exploit the unique performance characteristics of this ultra high performance thermoplastic and address a vast array of business application opportunities.
Whether working to make planes and automobiles lighter, create unique patient implant solutions in healthcare or deliver value-added products in semiconductor, oil & gas and coatings, our intimate knowledge of PEKK and it’s growing array of high performance applications has allowed us to be directly involved in addressing a range of challenges in advanced manufacturing and human sustainability.
